If you are not a fan of sumo, you are missing out! Far more than the freak show many might imagine, this historied martial art is action-packed and features tradition, strength, skill, strategy, and superstar personalities. After a couple years of watching NHK World Japan’s Grand Sumo highlights, I was excited to attend my first live tournament–the inaugural Rain City Open in 2025. My husband and teammates competed, while I put my combat sports photography skills to a brand new use. The local sumo community was very welcoming and I was happy to be asked back to take photographs the next year at another very successful event. I hope to be back again!
